Changing the Battery in Your Mini Key Fob

The key fob can be a convenient option to lock and unlock your car from some distance. It also allows you to activate the panic button on your vehicle, which can deter break-ins.

You can fix your fob by following few simple steps. First, make sure that the battery is in good condition. Remove the battery from the ignition and then press the lock button rapidly three times.

Battery

Change the battery in your key fob is one of the most straightforward fixes. The fob has a tiny coin-shaped 3V battery (CR2032 or CR2025) that is usually easy to find in general stores or home improvement stores and a few auto parts stores. You should use a new battery. Batteries that are old can damage the circuit boards and cease to be useful.

Begin by opening the fob. You may have to use a flat screwdriver break the two halves. Then, you can insert the screwdriver into the seam on both sides of the fob to lift the clips to secure it. They can easily break, so be careful and work slowly.

After replacing the battery take the fob apart and test it to see if everything is working just as it should. If it's still not working try pressing the button a few times and verifying that the contacts are clear. You could also try the fob with a spare to see if the problem is specific to your key. If not, then there could be another reason that caused the key fob not to function. It could be due to a worn button, for example. This would trigger the button periodically, not continuously.

Interference

The key fob is powered by a small transmitter that transmits signals of a short range to a receiver inside your car. Its function is to allow your vehicle to recognize the key fob, unlock its doors when you come close to it, and begin when you push the ignition button.

The problem is, interference can sometimes interfere with that communication. For instance, if are using your second-generation Apple Pencil charged while you're holding the fob, it may hinder you from unlocking your car (via iGeneration).

Other electronic devices that utilize the same frequency as the fob may also interfere with its signal. This could include garage door openers and tire pressure monitoring systems. It's even possible that an RF transmitter within your home might interfere with the fob's signal, but this would be difficult to diagnose without the assistance of a qualified test.

Your key fob may also need to be reprogrammed. This procedure will require the transmitter in your fob to become recognized by the receiver inside your Mini Smart Key and a specific code is used for each pairing. Fobs typically need to be changed when they're removed or replaced, if you buy a new one or, in certain cases, when a battery is changed. Chips with a problem
